Kamini

Kamini, aged 19, lives in Dakshinpuri, a resettlement colony of Delhi, along with her family of seven members. Her parents are unlettered; her mother is a housewife and her father vends small plastic items on a pushcart. Expectedly the family could barely keep its head above water. But that was only until now.

The compelling circumstances drew young Kamini to explore ways to make herself an earning member of the family. She observed that the neighbourhood womenfolk amply patronised local beauty parlours.  She was very enthused and felt she was suited for the job. She quickly enrolled at our centre for a vocational training course in beauty culture. 

Her particular aptitude was ‘mehendi’ (henna) art and she shone as she showcased her skill. She worked overtime even as she trained. Soon she had enough work all year, and not only during during festivals and weddings only. 

At last Kamini had become a significant contributing member for her family. Post the training Kamini was selected for a job in a parlour in Malviya Nagar at a salary of Rs 5,000 monthly.  Clients at the parlour sought her out for jobs like waxing, threading, mehendi, facials, manicure, pedicure etc. In only three months the parlour doubled her remuneration! Soon Kamini started receiving work even after-parlour hours. Besides, girls in the neighbourhood came to train with her. Today she is a popular wedding mehndi specialist. 

Kamini has indeed come a long way and we take great pride in her achievemnets. A young adult herself, she feels especially fulfilled that she has enabled her family to send her younger siblings to school.
