Laali
As the old saying goes, Where there's a will, there's a way. This holds true in the case of 8-year old, hearing impaired Laali. Despite all odds, this little girl has become an inspiration for many of us.
She comes from a poor family of New Seemapuri (East Delhi). The dwelling she lives in is a 15x10 sq ft room - they have to use the municipality's toilets and have to fetch drinking water from the nearby tank. The family of six members comprises her parents and three siblings. Her mother works as a domestic help on a meagre salary of 1500/- per month to feed her family members, while her father is a drunkard who only pulls rickshaw to fulfil his own needs, and does not contribute at all to the home, Laali's elder brother is unemployed. Her younger brother Chandu is also enrolled at the centre with her as he had rickets, which is now cured. Her younger sister, Kareena, is barely 3 and half years old. All of them stay together.
Laali has won a silver medal in Rangoli competition at VSAI (Very Special Arts India). The sense of victory and satisfaction that one can see on her face is worth millions.
We have also identified a special school for her nearby, where she can study in a structured way. Besides this we also plan to give her Vocational Training, so that she can be independent financially and also contribute to her family's financial income.
